In April 2023, Aaron Ramsdale was on the cusp of winning the Premier League with Arsenal. But a costly error in a 3-3 draw with Southampton contributed to the club's collapse, ultimately handing the title to Manchester City.

Four months later, David Raya arrived at Arsenal, displacing Ramsdale from the number one spot. Today, Ramsdale finds himself surprisingly out of favour at Southampton, a Championship club, three years later.

So, what went wrong?

Ramsdale's Arsenal rise and fall

Questions arose when Arsenal signed Ramsdale from Sheffield United for £24m in 2021, following their relegation. However, his impressive debut season, marked by a stunning save against Leicester City, won over Arsenal fans.

Ramsdale played a key role in Arsenal's surprise title challenge in 2022-23, earning recognition with the PFA Team of the Year and London Football Awards Goalkeeper of the Year. However, his form dipped in 2023-24, and he lost his starting spot to Raya after just four league games.

*A mistake against his former club Brentford further damaged his Arsenal career, leading to his transfer to Southampton for £25m in August 2024.

From England international promise to Championship reserve

At 28, Ramsdale's prime years are being wasted without senior football. His fall from grace raises questions about the factors that contributed to his rapid descent.

Was it the pressure of playing for a title-challenging Arsenal side? The arrival of Raya? Or perhaps a lack of mental resilience?

This is a testament to the fickle nature of football, where even the most promising talents can find themselves on the sidelines, forgotten.
