Ayaz Welcomes PCA Decision Upholding Indus Waters Treaty
ISLAMABAD, (APP – UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – 1st Sep, 2026) Speaker of the National Assembly, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, has welcomed the unanimous decision of the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) affirming that the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) remains fully in force and that India has no valid grounds to unilaterally suspend or terminate the Treaty.
He stated that this decision signifies a significant affirmation of international law, treaty obligations, and the principle that disputes must be resolved through peaceful and established legal mechanisms.
Ayaz Sadiq emphasized Pakistan’s commitment to respecting international treaties and upholding international law, while also advocating for dialogue and peaceful dispute resolution. He highlighted the importance of the Indus Waters Treaty as a crucial international agreement, integral to the region’s livelihood, agriculture, economic development, and prosperity.
The Speaker stressed that such vital treaties must be respected and upheld in letter and spirit. He criticized India’s unilateral suspension of the IWT, noting it contradicted the Treaty’s provisions and was inconsistent with international law principles.
Ayaz Sadiq further emphasized that the PCA’s decision exposed India’s lack of legal justification for its attempt to place the Treaty in abeyance. He underscored the significance of India fulfilling its obligations under the agreement.
He characterized India’s unilateral suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty and its effort to use water as a weapon against Pakistan as water terrorism, with potential to cause severe humanitarian suffering, economic disruption, and far-reaching consequences for regional peace and stability.
The NA Speaker welcomed the PCA’s decision regarding the Ratle Hydroelectric Plant and expressed hope that India would respect the ruling and fully comply with its IWT obligations.
