Bristol Bake Off Star Says 'Going Sober' Has Been 'Glorious'
BBC News reports on Briony May Williams, a Great British Bake Off star turned TV presenter, who has shared her experience of becoming sober for nearly three years.
Briony May Williams, from Bristol, reached the Bake Off semi-finals in 2018 but was eliminated after serving judges "raw pastry" due to a mix-up with sugar and salt. After a hospital visit following an "alcohol-heavy 39th birthday" at the end of 2023, Williams decided to make significant changes in her life and go sober.
She reflects, "Going sober—it's glorious. It's not always easy but it's always worth it, and I feel much more able to cope with what life throws at me." She hit the 1000 days alcohol-free milestone in July, noting, "It felt really huge... It's been a huge mind shift but now it's just a normal part of my life."
Williams, who has built a career presenting shows like Morning Live, Escape To The Country, and Food Unwrapped, shares that she was never addicted to alcohol but enjoyed "a vino or five on a night out." She decided to quit without setting a specific goal, focusing instead on one day at a time.
Despite being out of the Bake Off tent for eight years, Williams remains a fan and sports a Bake Off tattoo on her ribs. She expresses excitement about the show's 17th series, which will feature TV chef Nigella Lawson replacing Dame Prue Leith.
