BBC Director General on Cuts and Future of Broadcasting
BBC director general Matt Brittin reveals his lack of awareness regarding the severity of cuts needed at the corporation, stating in an interview at the Edinburgh TV Festival:
"On the financial side, I knew that cuts had been announced and that savings had been announced, but I hadn’t really understood the severity."
The savings target stands at £160m towards a total of £500m in savings by 2028-29, with approximately 2,000 jobs expected to be cut.
During his conversation with Kirsty Wark, Brittin expressed admiration for the BBC’s "creativity and talent" but also identified challenges posed by:
- Rapidly changing consumer behavior
- The AI revolution
- Loud critics and political pressure
Brittin, formerly a regional policy manager at Google, emphasizes his desire to bring a culture of experimentation and learning to the BBC. He is the first director-general in two decades without prior BBC experience.
He also addressed the BBC’s ongoing legal battle with Donald Trump over a Panorama documentary on the US Capitol riots, stating their intention to dismiss the case on jurisdictional grounds.
