BBC’s Ski Sunday to End After Nearly 50 Years
BBC Sport announces the end of its iconic winter sports programme, Ski Sunday, after nearly five decades on air. First broadcast in 1978, it featured notable presenters like Ed Leigh and Chemmy Alcott.
According to a BBC Sport statement, "Changing audience behaviours and the tough financial decisions needed to meet savings requirements…" led to this decision. Philip Bernie, head of BBC Sport events, acknowledged the programme’s significance:
"Ski Sunday has been a truly iconic programme. Generations of viewers have enjoyed its coverage of the best in winter sports."
He expressed gratitude for the programme’s contributors while emphasizing the need to adapt to evolving viewing habits and make difficult choices to serve licence fee payers effectively. Despite this, BBC Sport remains committed to showcasing winter sport, especially at the Winter Olympics, across various platforms.
