Bids Invited To Rehabilitate Guddu Power Plant Turbine To Cut Generation Cost
ISLAMABAD, (APP – UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – 30th Aug, 2026) The Power Division has invited international competitive bids for the rehabilitation of the damaged Steam Turbine-16 (ST-16) and allied equipment at Guddu 747 MW Power Plant. This project is expected to reduce generation cost by Rs4.19 per unit and unlock an additional 297 MW of generation capacity.
Currently, as the ST-16 remains out of service due to a July 2022 fire, the plant operates at around 450 MW, ranking low in the dispatch queue with expensive power. Once restored to full combined-cycle operation, the plant will generate its designed 747 MW and improve its merit-order standing significantly.
Following a technical study and engineering review, the procurement process for the turbine repair has begun. The targeted commissioning date is December 2028.
The Power Division has prepared an EPC-turnkey procurement package after comprehensive integrity assessments. International competitive bids are invited for the rehabilitation project, with submissions due by 7 October 2026. This is a crucial step in restoring the plant’s full potential.
The additional generation capability of 297 MW represents a substantial increase, ensuring Pakistan maximizes its existing assets and delivers value to consumers without relying solely on new infrastructure. The Power Division’s proactive approach reflects the government’s commitment to maximizing existing resources, improving efficiency, and providing tangible benefits to consumers.
