Paul Lambert believes sacking Martin O'Neill would be a surprise move from Celtic, but the former club captain would be "shocked and disappointed" if the manager was to be removed.
The 74-year-old said he will use the international break to reflect on his future following back-to-back defeats by Rangers. Those losses, coupled with a home defeat to Ferencvaros in the Europa League and a Champions League collapse to LASK, have led to calls for O'Neill's departure.
"I will reflect on the games," said O'Neill, who was reappointed permanent manager in the summer. "I'm not immune from criticism."
Lambert, however, believes O'Neill is the best manager Celtic have had since the legendary Jock Stein:
It wouldn't surprise me if he left. I don't think he needs it. I'd be shocked and disappointed if Celtic sacked him.
He added that if O'Neill wants to leave, "he goes himself," as the manager has enough credit built up over his time at the club.

O'Neill steadied the ship twice last term following the departures of Brendan Rodgers and Wilfried Nancy. "There was only one person who could rescue Celtic last season and he did that," said Lambert.
