Charpai beneath a tree offers a practical and low-cost way for South Punjabis to cope with scorching summer heat. In Chah Inaamwala, a small village near Multan, 68-year-old Baba Shafi drags his woven charpai under the shade of a mango tree every afternoon. This tradition, passed down through generations, is becoming increasingly relevant as heatwaves intensify across Pakistan.
Elderly villagers, especially those with limited access to air conditioning, rely on this simple solution for relief from the heat. The charpai’s open design, constructed with local date-palm leaf fibers, allows for better airflow and keeps users cooler than traditional mattresses. While synthetic ropes are now available, natural materials remain preferred for their cooling properties.
