China Opens 134-kilometre Pinglu Canal to Boost ASEAN Connectivity
China has inaugurated a major new canal, providing a shortcut from its landlocked southwest to the coast and international markets, particularly those within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), its largest trading partner.
According to Xinhua news agency, the canal stretches 134.2 kilometres and was constructed at a cost of 72.7 billion Yuan (approximately US$10.75 billion). It connects Nanning, capital of south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, to Beibu Gulf, the closest maritime outlet for much of southwest China.
