Chinese Envoy Lauds South Punjab’s Mango and Agri Potential

MULTAN: Chinese Consul General Sun Yaan praised South Punjab for its immense potential in education, health, agriculture, livestock, and tourism during a visit to the South Punjab Civil Secretariat on Wednesday. He also highlighted the region’s vibrant culture and, in particular, its renowned mangoes.
Accompanied by a delegation, Sun Yaan met with Additional Chief Secretary South Punjab Fuad Hashim Rabbani. The meeting discussed bilateral matters and cooperation possibilities in agriculture, education, health, livestock, and import-export potential.
Following the meeting, a joint briefing session was held where special secretaries from various departments presented their initiatives:
- Agriculture: Mango, red chili, cotton, sugarcane, onion, dates, maize, and wheat are South Punjab’s major crops. 314,000 Kisan Cards have been issued under the Punjab CM’s financial assistance scheme. Focus is on animal health, genetics, and meeting international standards for milk and meat production.
- Health: The region boasts 13 specialized hospitals, 9 DHQ hospitals, 35 THQ hospitals, 112 Maryam Nawaz Hospitals, 761 Maryam Nawaz Health Clinics, 278 "Clinics on Wheels," and 11 field hospitals. South Punjab is also polio-free.
- Education: Enrollments stand at 3.38 million students across 13,515 schools and over 197,000 in 202 colleges. The CM’s School Meal Programme continues successfully throughout the region.
Rabbani proposed establishing a halal meat export-ready slaughterhouse and packing facility in Bahawalnagar, which received strong endorsement. He highlighted the positive impact of the South Punjab Secretariat on divisional and district administration, emphasizing the success of Bahawalpur and Multan Agri Malls in providing farmers with one-stop services.
Rabbani stressed the importance of equipping younger generations with modern education, health facilities, updated curricula, and skills. Sun Yaan concurred, adding that improving seed quality and adopting modern agricultural machinery could bolster Pakistan’s economy. He emphasized the enduring friendship between the peoples of Pakistan and China, growing stronger with each generation.
