Climate Change Drives Record Heat in Europe's Seas, Scientists Say
Human-caused climate change is the main driver of recent record-breaking sea temperatures around Europe, according to scientists. This phenomenon has severe implications for marine ecosystems and coastal communities.
Extreme Heat in Europe's Seas
Europe's seas have experienced extreme heat this summer, with notable instances:
- The Mediterranean reached an average temperature of 27°C (81°F) in July, the highest July record.
- An offshore buoy near Mallorca recorded 33°C in early August.
Impact of Climate Change
The World Weather Attribution (WWA) group's analysis reveals that human-induced climate change has contributed approximately:
- 2°C of warming to the Mediterranean.
- 1.4°C to Western European seas.
"This could lead to a significant metamorphosis in coastal ecosystems, impacting food and income sources for communities, and potentially causing damaging land-based extreme weather," said Claire Bergin, a climate scientist at Maynooth University in Ireland.
Key Findings
The study found that peak sea temperatures this year in specific regions would have been "virtually impossible" without human-caused climate change:
- Eastern and Western Mediterranean.
- Bay of Biscay and Iberian coast.
