Commerce Minister, Hong Kong Chief Executive Reaffirm Stronger Trade, Economic Cooperation

Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan met with the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), China, Mr. John Lee Ka-Chiu, where both sides expressed their commitment to deepen trade, economic cooperation, and people-to-people linkages between Pakistan and Hong Kong.
Mr. YAU Ying Wah, Algernon, Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development of HKSAR, and Pakistan’s Consul General in Hong Kong, Mr. Riaz Ahmed Sheikh, were also present during the high-profile meeting.
During the meeting, the Chief Executive appreciated Minister Jam Kamal Khan’s strong address at the Belt and Road Summit earlier in the day, highlighting his message of international cooperation, connectivity, and shared economic prosperity.
Mr. John K.C. Lee thanked Pakistan for its role in promoting peace and contributing to regional stability, emphasizing that reduced tensions and greater stability are vital for global economic growth. He also appreciated Pakistan’s leadership and constructive engagement in this regard.
The Chief Executive noted the longstanding and close relationship between Pakistan and China, acknowledging its positive impact on the Belt and Road Initiative. He also expressed gratitude for the efforts of the Consulate General of Pakistan in Hong Kong in bringing the two sides closer and fostering greater exchanges in recent years.
Minister Jam Kamal Khan thanked the Chief Executive for Hong Kong’s warm hospitality and reiterated Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to its historic relationship with China, while emphasizing the importance Pakistan attaches to expanding its trade and economic partnership with Hong Kong. He highlighted the presence of a significant Pakistani diaspora in Hong Kong and their valuable contribution to Pakistan’s economy, particularly through remittances and stronger people-to-people linkages.
Seeking to unlock new avenues of cooperation, Jam Kamal Khan called for greater engagement in sectors such as trade in services, aviation, finance, and business-to-business connectivity. He specifically urged Hong Kong to explore the resumption of Cathay Pacific flights to Pakistan, suggesting that improved air connectivity could benefit business, tourism, and commercial exchanges.
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthen cooperation and explore new areas of mutual economic interest. Minister Jam Kamal Khan also extended an invitation to Chief Executive John K.C. Lee to visit Pakistan.
Earlier, the Federal Minister held a separate meeting with Mr. Algernon Yau, Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development of HKSAR, during which they exchanged views on expanding bilateral trade and economic engagement.
Mr. Yau appreciated Minister Jam Kamal Khan’s strong support for the Belt and Road Initiative.
