Commissioner Orders Comprehensive Fire, Electrical Safety Audit Of Hospitals

Division Irfan Ali Kathia has expressed deep sorrow and grief over the loss of 15 newborn babies in a fire incident at PIMS Hospital and directed a comprehensive review of fire and electrical safety arrangements at all government hospitals across Bahawalpur Division.
He directed the authorities concerned to:
- Ensure strict compliance with prescribed fire safety standards.
- Maintain adequate water availability for emergencies.
- Ensure the operational readiness of fire hydrants.
- Identify and rectify potential risks of short-circuiting without delay.
The Commissioner also instructed hospitals to:
- Inspect the availability, expiry dates, and operational condition of fire extinguishers.
- Ensure all firefighting equipment remained functional and accessible.
- Keep fire alarms, emergency exits, and evacuation signboards fully operational, visible, and properly maintained.
- Strengthen firefighting and safety arrangements in paediatric and gynaecology wards.
- Keep emergency routes and exits clear, accessible, and free from obstructions.
He stressed the need for effective arrangements to ensure the safe and timely evacuation of patients, attendants, and hospital staff in emergencies.
The Commissioner directed the relevant health and administrative authorities to treat hospital fire and electrical safety as a priority and address all identified deficiencies promptly.
