Cyber Attack Shuts Down Small Power Plant

A small power plant experienced a cyber attack recently, according to the British government. While there was no risk to the UK’s energy system, the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has reached out to power companies to raise awareness about potential cyber threats.

The Daily Telegraph reported that the attack, attributed to hackers linked to Iran, occurred last month and led to a four-day shutdown of the affected generator. DESNZ confirmed the incident involved a small-scale generator but assured that the wider energy system remained unharmed.

The UK’s power network relies on several smaller gas generators as backup sources for short-term power needs. Protecting critical infrastructure from cyber attacks is a significant concern for the government, which is in the process of updating cybersecurity regulations and developing an energy resilience strategy.

Iran has previously demonstrated its capabilities in cyber warfare, but despite heightened tensions with the US, there have been few notable incidents so far.
