Tottenham Hotspur coach Roberto De Zerbi faces a daunting task in curing his team’s losing mentality, despite spending close to £400m on player transfers. Following their first Premier League game of the season, a heavy defeat at Brentford, De Zerbi acknowledged that building mental strength goes beyond financial investment.

While De Zerbi, who was given seven games to save Spurs from relegation in March, succeeded in retaining their top-flight status, this humbling loss serves as a stark reminder that money alone cannot guarantee success or overcome deep-rooted psychological issues within a team.

Despite significant changes in transfer strategy and roster, Spurs crumbled under pressure, displaying a lack of conditioning, resilience, and overall performance against Brentford. De Zerbi attributed the defeat to his players’ physical condition, many of whom returned from international duty at the World Cup or were new signings.

"Bad game," De Zerbi told BBC Sport’s Match of the Day. "We lost and suffered the difference in the duels. It was the key of this game. We didn’t fight in the right way. Maybe credit to them because it’s the best quality Brentford have."

The day began with optimism among Spurs fans, eager to welcome their new signings. However, by the end of the match, many supporters left early as Spurs found themselves on the receiving end of a 3-0 defeat, with one highlight being Igor Thiago’s missed penalty.

Even rock star Jon Bon Jovi, in attendance at The Gtech Community Stadium, could not have anticipated such a disheartening display from his new team.
