Intensifying Tensions

PESHAWAR, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 23rd Sep, 2026) Differences between the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government and the inspector general of police have intensified, as the provincial cabinet approved withdrawing the IGP’s powers and endorsed the KP Police Act 2026.

Emergency Cabinet Meeting

The emergency cabinet meeting was chaired by Chief Minister Sohail Afridi. The provincial government will have authority over all police appointments and transfers, while police policy powers have been transferred from the IGP to the chief minister.

The chief minister has also been given the authority to formulate policies concerning the operational, financial, and administrative affairs of the police. The provincial government will issue the notification for the appointment of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa IGP.

Temporary Arrangements

Transfers of all deputy superintendents of police, superintendents of police, district police officers, and regional police officers will also require the chief minister’s approval. In the absence of the IGP, the additional inspector general of police (Headquarters) will hold temporary charge.

The provincial government will seek three names from the Federal government and appoint the IGP itself. The police will not submit replies directly in any matter; replies approved by the Law Department and the Advocate General’s Office will be submitted by the police wherever required.
