Diljit Dosanjh: Punjabi singer makes history under the famous Wembley arch

On Saturday night, under the world-famous Wembley arch, a unique announcement rang out: "Punjabi Aa Gaye Wembley Oye!"
Indian megastar Diljit Dosanjh famously begins his concerts with this declaration – but this time, it was a playful twist on his usual catchphrase. He became the first ever Punjabi singer to headline Wembley Stadium, according to the music venue.
Addressing his fans, Dosanjh reflected on the historical significance of the moment: "This moment will go down in the history books." As energetic Bhangra beats blasted, spectators erupted into cheers while Dosanjh performed his biggest hits, from "G.O.A.T." to "Lover".
Over two decades, Dosanjh has cultivated a massive global fanbase, topping charts and collaborating with the likes of Ed Sheeran. He even showed off his Bhangra moves alongside Jimmy Fallon, with the latter labeling him "the biggest Punjabi artist on the planet"
His landmark concert at Wembley further solidifies his status as a global superstar. Before the show, Dosanjh spoke exclusively to the BBC backstage, describing the experience as a "dream."
A Global Sensation in London
Dosanjh’s audience was diverse, though largely South Asian, with fans arriving early to secure their spots.
"MJ [Michael Jackson] and Madonna – he’s that level for us," exclaimed one fan. "He’s so good looking, and so down to earth," added another.
When Dosanjh took the stage around 8 pm dressed in traditional attire, the stadium erupted into a frenzy of cheers that barely paused for the next two-and-a-half hours. Known for his energetic performances, he wowed spectators with intricate dance routines, including songs like "Hass Hass" and "Born to Shine." His soulful voice resonated throughout the stadium as he seamlessly blended Punjabi music with rap and hip-hop.
Throughout the show, Dosanjh connected personally with fans, inviting them on stage, from young children to an elderly woman, taking selfies and bestowing gifts upon them. He also acknowledged those seated far back in the 90,000-seater stadium, telling them they were "full of heart" and encouraging applause for them.
There was exciting news for Indian fans as well – Dosanjh announced he will be performing at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad later this year.
