Disinformation Must Be Countered Through Timely, Fact-Based and Coordinated Strategy: Uzma Bukhari

Punjab Information Minister Uzma Bukhari emphasized the need to protect young people and students from fake information, hate content, and anti-state propaganda during a meeting.

A fourth meeting of the Information Steering/Review Committee, chaired by Punjab Information and Culture Minister Uzma Bukhari, was held to review the implementation and progress of the revised National Action Plan in Punjab and discuss future actions.
Punjab Information Secretary Syed Tahir Raza Hamdani and representatives from relevant departments attended. The secretary presented an update on progress made and measures taken since the previous meeting.
Key points discussed included:
- Improving departmental coordination and providing responsible information.
- Timely countering of misleading narratives.
- Addressing disinformation, hate content, negative propaganda, and anti-state narratives.
Minister Bukhari stressed that disinformation cannot be countered solely through reaction; a proactive, timely, fact-based, and coordinated strategy is required. She called for all relevant departments to work together under a unified strategy with mutual coordination and harmony.
She highlighted the effective role played by the Information and Culture Department in achieving the National Action Plan’s objectives and the need to effectively showcase Pakistan’s achievements during Marka-e-Haq and the national narrative.
Noting the vulnerability of young people and students to misleading content on digital and social media, Minister Bukhari directed:
- Incorporating media literacy and responsible digital behavior into school curricula.
- Utilizing school counseling and educational forums to raise students’ awareness.
- Educating students about responsible social media use, identifying fake information, and fact-checking.
She emphasized the importance of developing critical thinking and media literacy skills in students to distinguish verified content from fabricated narratives.
The meeting concluded that all institutions would play their part in combating disinformation, hate speech, and anti-state propaganda, while ensuring strong coordination and a unified strategy.
