Early release scheme prisoner jailed days after leaving

London Shoplifter Reoffends Within Day of Early Release, Says Met

The shoplifter began reoffending at two north-west London supermarkets the day after his release from Wandsworth Prison, according to Det Ch Supt Luke Williams, a Metropolitan Police commander.

Details of the Incident

  • The individual, with 16 previous convictions across more than 100 investigations, was released early under the Early Release Scheme on October 1st from HMP Wandsworth.
  • Just one day after his release, he was recorded on CCTV stealing at two supermarkets in the area.
  • Following reports from store staff, neighbourhood officers spent an entire day locating and arresting him.

Concerns Over Early Release Scheme

Det Ch Supt Williams expressed concerns about the speed with which the offender reoffended and the strain this placed on front-line policing. The case required 27 officer hours to investigate, costing £1,887.

He emphasized that while the scheme aimed to relieve pressure on a "on the brink of collapse" prison system, the consequences are being felt by policing without any recognition. This case, he noted, is not an isolated incident but is recurring across London.

Government Response

A Ministry of Justice spokesperson defended the scheme, stating that they inherited a prison system on the brink of collapse.
