ECNEC Approves Rs 56bn Babu Sabu Wastewater Treatment Plant Project
LAHORE, (APP – UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – 22nd Aug, 2026) The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) has approved the Rs 56 billion Babu Sabu Wastewater Treatment Plant project, paving the way for the construction of Lahore’s first waste water treatment facility.
According to a spokesperson for the Housing Department, the project will be established over 836 acres in collaboration with the French donor agency, Agence Française de Développement (AFD), with a treatment capacity of 88 million gallons per day (MGD). Under the initiative, sewage water will be treated using modern methods before being discharged into the River Ravi, significantly reducing environmental pollution and safeguarding Lahore’s water resources.
The spokesperson noted that a total of six wastewater treatment plants will ultimately be required to achieve comprehensive sewage treatment across the city. The spokesperson added that the Punjab government, under the vision of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, continues to implement practical measures to provide modern basic amenities and promote sustainable urban development.
