“Unfortunately, some extremely influential and powerful business groups are blocking Starlink in India to maintain their monopolistic hold over the Indian public,” Elon Musk said in a post on X.

NEW DELHI, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 7th Oct, 2026) SpaceX chief and billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has strongly reacted to delays in launching Starlink’s satellite internet service in India, alleging that certain powerful business groups are obstructing Starlink to maintain their monopolistic hold over the Indian public.

In a response to a post on the social media platform X, Musk said, “Unfortunately, some extremely influential and powerful business groups are blocking Starlink in India to maintain their monopolistic hold over the Indian public.” He sarcastically added that people could figure out who they were and described this as a crime against the Indian public.

Musk did not name any specific businessperson or company.

Starlink is rapidly preparing to launch its service in India, and the company says much of the infrastructure required to provide service in various parts of the country has been prepared. The company has established multiple gateway sites and installed a large number of antennas.

According to reports, Starlink has received important regulatory approval to provide satellite communications services in India; however, security clearance, spectrum allocation and other government and technical requirements must still be completed before commercial service can begin.

Musk’s latest statement comes as access to high-speed internet remains a major challenge in India’s remote and rural areas. Indian data shows that thousands of villages still lack complete 4G coverage. Starlink’s supporters say satellite internet technology could provide an effective alternative for areas where installing fibre-optic networks or mobile towers is difficult because of geographical and financial constraints.

However, Starlink already faces competition from several major business players in India’s satellite internet market. Reliance-affiliated Jio, owned by Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani, Bharti Airtel and other global companies are also active in satellite communications. In this context, Musk’s allegation of a “monopolistic hold” has sparked a new debate over competition in India’s telecommunications market. Although Musk did not name any company, his statement has prompted speculation in Indian technology and telecom circles about the powerful business interests he was referring to.

Meanwhile, national security, consumer data, spectrum allocation and compliance with local laws also remain important issues for Starlink’s Indian plans. The company will be allowed to begin commercial operations only after Indian authorities are fully satisfied on these matters and grant the necessary approvals.
