UK Pupils Perform Well Again in International Reading, Maths and Science Tests
British pupils have once again demonstrated high proficiency in international assessments of reading, mathematics, and science, according to the latest results from the Programme for International Student Assessment (Pisa).
The UK’s performance in the Pisa rankings remained consistent, placing it above countries like the US, Australia, and most European nations, but behind top performers Singapore, Estonia, and parts of China.
However, the report highlights a concerning global trend: a decline in reading skills among teenagers.
England’s schools minister, Georgia Gould, expressed optimism about these results, stating the government aims to build upon them and ensure all young people achieve strong literacy and numeracy.
The Pisa tests assess students’ problem-solving abilities, critical thinking, communication, and knowledge across various subjects. The 2025 tests, taken by a sample of 760,000 15-year-olds in 91 countries, provided insights into education systems worldwide.
Notably, the UK’s results varied significantly between nations, with England consistently outperforming Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, reflecting differences in curricula across the home nations.
Ms Gould highlighted Estonia as an example of a nation where "academic excellence can go hand in hand with high-quality vocational routes," while England’s education reforms focus on offering technical subjects to students from age 14.
Despite England’s successes, Shadow Education Secretary Laura Trott attributed them to previous reforms and accused the current government of attempting to undermine them.
