Enlightened Literary Icon Ashfaq Ahmed Remembered
LAHORE, (APP – UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – 7th Sep, 2026) The 22nd death anniversary of literary icon Ashfaq Ahmed was observed here on Monday.
Ashfaq Ahmed, since his passing, has been remembered as a great writer, perfect thinker and enlightened leader who excelled in multiple art forms. His fans still cherish his memories.
Born on August 22, 1925, in Muktsar, Ferozepur (a district of India), Ahmed taught at Dyal Singh College and Oriental College, Lahore. He emerged as one of the renowned writers post-Pakistan’s establishment in 1947, with his short story Gudariya bringing him fame in 1953.
He also edited magazines Dastan-Go and Lail-o-Nihar. His collections of short stories include:
- Ek Mohabbat So Afsaney
- Ujlay Phool
- Safar Meena
- Phul-kari
- Subhan Afsaney.
Prominent works later in his career include Safar Dar Safar (travelogue), Khel Kahani (novel), Ek Mohabbat So Drama, and Tota Kahani (dramas).
The Pakistan government honoured him with the Presidential Medal for Excellence, Sitara-e-Imtiaz, and Hilal-e-Imtiaz. Ashfaq Ahmed, a Sufi, passed away on September 7, 2004, in Lahore and was buried in the Model Town cemetery.
