Esther Rantzen: I’m Too Fragile to Travel to Switzerland to End My Life
Dame Esther Rantzen has stated she is now "too physically fragile" to travel to Switzerland to end her life at an assisted suicide clinic. The veteran broadcaster, 86, revealed she was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer about a year ago and had joined the Dignitas clinic in Switzerland. However, by the time her life became unbearable, she was unable to make the journey due to her frail condition.
Rantzen used this opportunity to reiterate her plea for MPs to vote in favor of legalizing assisted suicide in England and Wales when the proposed legislation is revisited on Friday. She described the current law as "messy and cruel" and urged it to change quickly.
Assisted suicide is currently illegal across the UK, but a draft law being considered by MPs would make it legal under specific circumstances for terminally ill individuals with less than six months to live in England and Wales. While Rantzen supports the bill, there are also campaigners against it, including Paralympian Baroness Grey-Thompson, who fear pressure on vulnerable people and insufficient safeguards in the proposed legislation.
The bill has gone through multiple drafts and been scrutinized by various Parliamentary committees. It was previously introduced but ran out of time before passage. Reintroduced in this Parliament, a second vote will be held on Friday. If passed in the House of Commons, rare powers could be invoked to bypass the House of Lords’ assent, allowing the legislation to become law without delay.
