Expert Urges Comprehensive Survey to Assess Arsenic Contamination
UrduPoint (September 06, 2026, 11:20 AM) – Multan remains unclear due to varied water sources and testing methods, according to a spokesperson, Research Officer Saima Gul. She emphasizes that Pakistan’s permissible arsenic limit is 50 parts per billion (ppb), while the World Health Organization recommends a stricter 10 ppb guideline.
Gul notes that while naturally occurring geological factors are the primary cause, industrial and agricultural activities also contribute to local contamination. She warns that chronic exposure to arsenic can lead to severe health issues, including cardiovascular problems, organ damage, and various cancers.
Despite the government’s installation of filtration and reverse osmosis (RO) plants, Gul stresses that these can only be considered safe with recent laboratory test results confirming compliance. She advocates for an urgent, comprehensive city-wide survey to obtain a consolidated, recent dataset to accurately map and verify contamination levels.
