Formula 1 has announced the maximum race distance for grands prix will be reduced by 15km, from 305km (189.5 miles) to 290km (180.2 miles) for the 2027 season.
New rules will cover F1 races delayed or disrupted by rain or incidents.
By Andrew Benson, F1 Correspondent
Key Changes:
- A "hard stop time" will replace the current maximum three-hour duration to finish the event when there are interruptions caused by rain or accidents.
- This allows for greater flexibility to complete disrupted races.
- The hard stop time will vary depending on local conditions, with more flexibility at night races.
- The reduction in race distance reflects the changing power ratio from internal combustion to electrical power.
Another change approved by the F1 Commission includes extending free practice sessions should they be interrupted. Currently, the clock does not stop during red flag periods in practice sessions.
