Farmers Urged To Avoid Burning Paddy Residue To Curb Smog, Protect Soil Fertility
Pakistan is among the countries grappling with serious climate change and air pollution challenges, with smog emerging as a significant environmental hazard. The agriculture experts have advised paddy growers to abandon burning crop residue after harvesting, emphasizing its detrimental effects on both human health and the environment, as well as soil fertility.
A spokesperson for the Agriculture (Extension) Department explained that smog forms when various gases and pollutants in stagnant air combine with suspended particles, creating a dangerous mixture close to the ground. This can harm living organisms and impact plant growth, making it crucial to prevent crop-residue burning.
The expert suggested that farmers refrain from burning paddy stubble and instead incorporate it into the soil to enhance fertility. They recommended using a rotavator for manual harvesting and a disc harrow for machine-harvested fields. Deep plowing, broadcasting urea fertilizer, and irrigation can aid in decomposing the residue and improving soil health.
Adopting these environmentally conscious practices will not only reduce smog and air pollution but also boost soil fertility, contributing to healthier crops and sustainable agricultural production.
