Fire Safety SOPs Reviewed At Sukkur Hospitals After PIMS Tragedy
Following the tragic incident at Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) Hospital in Islamabad, officers from Civil Defence Sukkur, the district administration and Rescue 1122 conducted special visits to various hospitals in Sukkur to review and strengthen fire safety and emergency response arrangements.
On the special directives of Director Civil Defence Sindh Riaz Hussain Laghari, Commissioner Sukkur Abid Saleem Qureshi, Deputy Commissioner and Controller Civil Defence Sukkur Nadir Shahzad Khan, ADC-I Tanveer Ahmed, Assistant Commissioner Dr. Khansa Malik, Deputy Chief Warden Civil Defence Sukkur Dr. Saeed Awan, Incharge Officer Mian Jahangir Abbasi, and Emergency Officer Rescue 1122 Wahid Bakhsh visited Civil Hospital Sukkur, Blood Hospital, and Hira Hospital.
During these visits, the officers:
- Reviewed fire safety arrangements.
- Inspected emergency exits.
- Evaluated firefighting equipment and fire extinguishers.
- Checked evacuation routes and other safety measures.
They provided necessary instructions to the concerned hospital administrations, emphasizing the full and effective implementation of fire safety standard operating procedures (SOPs).
ADC-I Tanveer Ahmed highlighted the sensitivity of hospitals as places where patient, attendant, and medical staff safety should be a top priority. He strictly warned against any negligence in fire safety SOPs and directed all hospital administrations to:
- Maintain fire safety equipment in working condition.
- Offer regular training to staff on fire safety, emergency evacuation, and initial safety measures.
He further emphasized the importance of pre-emptive safety measures, trained staff, and an effective emergency plan for minimizing loss of life during emergencies.
Deputy Chief Warden Civil Defence Sukkur Dr. Saeed Awan assured continuous training programs and awareness activities regarding fire safety, rescue, first aid, and emergency response in hospitals and other sensitive institutions to ensure effective protection of human lives during any emergency situation.
Post Warden Mehmood Ahmed, Incharge Officer Fire Safety Lala Rehan Pathan, Shahab Hussain, and other Civil Defence and Rescue personnel participated in these visits.
The officers expressed their commitment to ongoing mutual cooperation among the concerned departments for improving fire safety standards in Sukkur hospitals and further strengthening their preparedness for emergency situations.
