Firefighters Share Experiences with Glutathione: Union Issues Warning

Firefighters have reported that glutathione, an antioxidant naturally produced by the body, has helped alleviate symptoms of illness following exposure to toxic fire smoke. However, their union, the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF), has issued a rare warning about its use.

Days after battling the Eaton Fire in Los Angeles, which became California’s second most destructive wildfire, Pasadena Fire Captain David Marquez inhaled glutathione. He shared his positive experience with the substance, stating that it immediately improved his well-being and helped his team cope with persistent symptoms like chronic cough, headache, and fatigue.

Scientists have long recognized the harmful effects of inhaling toxic smoke from wildfires on firefighters’ health, including an increased risk of cancer. According to the US National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety, firefighters face a 14% higher chance of developing cancer compared to the general American population. This has sparked interest in alternative treatments, even though many remain unproven and potentially dangerous.

Glutathione has been administered at recent major wildfires, including in Spokane, Washington. While anecdotal evidence suggests its potential benefits, large-scale research on its safety and efficacy is lacking. Concerns have been raised about purity and contaminated supplies, as evidenced by recent recalls of glutathione products due to contaminants.

The IAFF’s rare warning highlights these concerns, noting that scientific trials of other common vitamins have shown an increase in cancer risk instead of a decrease. Sean DeCrane, assistant to the general president for health and safety at the IAFF, emphasizes the uncertainty surrounding glutathione: "We don’t know if glutathione is effective. We don’t know if it’s a placebo effect."

This cautionary approach underscores the need for further research before widely adopting unproven treatments in high-risk professions like firefighting.
