Two women from the Bhutto family were arrested during General Zia’s era, while one woman each from the Sharif and Zardari families was arrested during Imran Khan’s government; now Imran Khan’s wife and three sisters have been arrested, a senior journalist commented.

ISLAMABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 21st Sep, 2026) Following the arrest of all three sisters of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf founding chairman Imran Khan in Lahore under the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) Act, senior journalist and analyst Hamid Mir has presented a comparison from political history, leading to the current government’s period being described as the harshest in terms of political victimisation and arrests of women.

According to details, in a post shared on social media platform X, Hamid Mir wrote that four women from Imran Khan’s family have so far been detained. Referring to political history, he said that during the dictatorial rule of former president General Zia-ul-Haq, only two women from the Bhutto family had been arrested.

The senior journalist further said that during Imran Khan’s own government, only one woman from the Sharif family, Maryam Nawaz, and one woman from the Zardari family, Faryal Talpur, were detained. However, he said that the current government had crossed all limits of political victimisation by arresting and sending to jail Imran Khan’s wife, Bushra Bibi, and his three sisters, Aleema Khan, Dr Uzma Khan and Noreen Niazi.
