Google Maps is now displaying fuel prices to assist motorists in finding the most affordable petrol and diesel in the UK as costs continue to rise. Effective from Thursday, a search for service stations on the app will show their locations and pricing, utilizing data provided through the government's Fuel Finder scheme.

This integration comes amidst rising fuel prices, with diesel recently topping £2 per litre for the first time, as described by RAC policy head Simon Williams.

Google Maps' new feature leverages its widespread use; according to Ofcom, it is relied upon by 77% of Britain's adult population for navigation. While other apps dedicated to finding cheap fuel exist, Apple Maps does not display fuel prices, and some experts question the reliability of Fuel Finder data.

Clare Lafferty from price comparison site PetrolPrices noted that while Fuel Finder provides some coverage, it is not entirely accurate, with sites occasionally failing to update their prices in a timely manner. Google Maps will independently verify data and only display prices when they have high confidence in their accuracy.

The Retail Motor Industry Federation confirmed that its members are adhering to the scheme's requirements. Launched in February, Fuel Finder aims to save households around £40 per year, as stated by former chancellor Rachel Reeves at its inception.
