England batter Emilio Gay: "Done enough" for South Africa tour – Alastair Cook
BBC Sport reports that England’s opening batsman, Emilio Gay, should retain his place for the upcoming winter tour of South Africa, according to former captain Sir Alastair Cook.
Gay scored a impressive Test-best 60 from 114 balls against Pakistan at Edgbaston, helping England gain control on day one. Although his 261 runs at an average of 26.1 might not stand out, Cook praises Gay’s character and determination to score runs, stating:
"I think Emilio Gay’s played really nicely… He is definitely a run-getter when he gets in… I would say he’s confident and intense."
Cook highlights Gay’s ability to defend against pace and his patient approach, leaving or defending 65 deliveries during his innings. He notes that Gay scores most of his runs through boundaries (68% of his Test runs), showcasing an all-round game.
Given Pakistan’s weak batting performance, this could be Gay’s final Test of the summer. With Jacob Bethell set to return from injury for the South Africa tour, a competition for places at the top of the order will likely involve Jordan Cox, Dan Lawrence, and Gay for two spots.
