GDA Announces PKR 23bn Private Investment For Sustainable Tourism In Galiyat
UrduPoint (11th Sep, 2026) – ABBOTTABAD: Director General Galiyat Development Authority (GDA) Mohammad Fawad has stated that promoting eco-friendly tourism and safeguarding Galiyat’s natural beauty remain top priorities, with approximately PKR 23 billion in private investment expected under the Thandiani Integrated Tourism Zone (ITZ) project.
Speaking to a delegation of Peshawar-based journalists during a visit organized by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Culture and Tourism Authority, the GDA chief revealed that measures are being taken to protect the region’s forests and ecological balance while providing tourists with modern, safe, and environmentally friendly facilities.
He highlighted the introduction of electric sightseeing carts at key tourist destinations to reduce traffic congestion and pollution, enhancing the visitors’ travel experience. The GDA has also implemented a ban on concrete construction for over a year, mandating prefabricated and wooden structures adhering to environmental requirements.
To curb unplanned high-rise construction, the GDA has amended its building control rules and introduced the Building Control Regulations (BCR-2026). These new regulations limit the maximum permitted building height in sensitive ecological and tourist areas to five floors from the previous seven, preserving scenic views and the natural character of Galiyat.
Mohammad Fawad announced that a private investor has signed an agreement for the integrated development of approximately 400 kanals in Thandiani. This project is projected to attract PKR 23 billion in private investment and generate around PKR 2.5 billion in revenue for the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government. He emphasized that the initiative will create job opportunities and stimulate economic activity while implementing environmental safeguards.
He further mentioned that work is underway on a water treatment plant in Nathiagali to prevent sewage and wastewater from contaminating natural springs and freshwater sources. The ongoing initiatives, according to the DG, aim to shift Galiyat towards a sustainable tourism model that preserves its forests, water resources, and unique ecological identity.
