Germany accuses Russia of drone attack at Leipzig airport
Germany has accused Russia of being behind a drone attack on Leipzig/Halle Airport in eastern Germany last month.
On 4 August, a drone carrying an explosive device was found near Ukrainian cargo planes at the airport. Although the detonator was faulty and the drone didn’t explode, investigators suspect a collision with a nearby cargo aircraft. A third drone was reportedly discovered near the airport ten days later.
Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt stated the attack followed "the well-established pattern of Russian hybrid operations in Europe" and expressed the belief that Germany would be targeted again.
Security experts had previously speculated Russia may be responsible, however, Russia has consistently rejected these claims.
Leipzig/Halle Airport is a base for Ukraine’s Antonov Airlines and is used by the German military and Nato allies for transporting military goods.
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has announced measures in response, including the closure of the Russian consulate in Bonn and the termination of the contract for the Russian House in Berlin. Nato Secretary General Mark Rutte expressed solidarity with Germany and welcomed the announced measures.
The issue will be further discussed at a meeting of EU foreign ministers later today.
