Gilani Calls For Stronger Parliamentary Diplomacy, Equal Application of International Law
Pakistan’s Senate Chairman and Founding Chairman of ISC, Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani, has called for stronger parliamentary diplomacy, equal application of international law, and peaceful conflict resolution to achieve peace and shared prosperity.
Addressing the General Debate of the 2nd Inter-Parliamentary Speakers’ Conference (ISC) in Phnom Penh, he emphasized that the conference’s theme, "Solidarity for Peace and Shared Prosperity," must move from ideals to action. Gilani stated, "Peace cannot be selective. A threat to peace anywhere is a threat to peace everywhere."
He highlighted Pakistan’s role in facilitating dialogue between the US and Iran, underscoring the importance of diplomacy and bridge-building in resolving differences. Gilani advocated for greater representation of the Global South in global rule-making and stressed the crucial role of parliaments in ratifying treaties, ensuring accountability, and promoting fair international norms.
"Pakistan has suffered from terrorism and hosted millions of refugees. We know the cost of conflict, and that is why we choose peace," he added.
The Chairman congratulated Cambodia on hosting a successful ISC, expressed solidarity with Nepal following a recent disaster, and welcomed Indonesia as the host of the next ISC. He proposed strengthening the ISC into a permanent institution with rapid-response mechanisms, fact-finding missions, and sustained parliamentary engagement on peace and security.
Co-chaired by Ouch Borith, First Vice President of the Senate of Cambodia, the session highlighted the collective efforts of parliamentarians worldwide to foster peace and prosperity.
