A 17-year-old girl was killed in the deadly sword attack at a high school in central Sweden on Friday, police have confirmed.
Two boys aged 12 and 17 were also seriously injured, while another person sustained minor injuries. An 18-year-old man was arrested but has not been identified. Police are treating the case as murder and attempted murder.
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and opposition leader Magdalena Andersson visited the school on Saturday morning, where flower tributes have been laid to honor the victims.
Students had only just returned to class following the summer break when the deadly attack unfolded on Friday afternoon. The police later confirmed they fired shots after being called to the scene but did not specify if the alleged attacker was hit before his arrest.
Sweden’s public broadcaster reported that the suspect was wearing a helmet and local media stated he was a former student. The region went into a state of emergency on Friday, which ended by Saturday.
The school, Brinell School in Fagersta, has approximately 500 students. Investigators have carried out two house searches related to the suspect.
Prime Minister Kristersson described the attack as "serious" and said police were working intensely on the case. Sweden’s King Carl XVI Gustaf expressed his dismay and sadness at the news.
