GLIDE Concludes Seventh Edition of Disease Elimination & Eradication Course in Rwanda

The Global Institute for Disease Elimination (GLIDE) has successfully concluded the seventh edition of its flagship Disease Elimination & Eradication Course (DEEC) in partnership with the University of Global Health Equity (UGHE) and The Carter Centre. The course was held at UGHE’s Butaro Campus in Rwanda.
This intensive program brought together 32 public health professionals from seven countries: Chad, Ethiopia, Libya, Namibia, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Tanzania, representing various government bodies, academic institutions, and frontline implementation agencies.
Program Structure
The DEEC program commenced with a virtual learning module from July 27 to August 27, 2026, followed by an in-person portion from August 31 to September 8, 2026.
Designed to accelerate disease elimination and eradication efforts, DEEC equips participants with:
- Essential public health frameworks
- Core operational tools
- Strategic leadership capabilities
The curriculum emphasizes tailored strategies addressing country-specific health systems and local epidemiological challenges.
Online Phase Highlights
During the initial online phase, participants explored foundational concepts in:
- Systems thinking
- Behavioral science
- Human-centered design
- Health economics and financing
They also analyzed a country-specific public health challenge serving as a central case study throughout the program.
In-Person Phase Activities
The subsequent in-person portion featured:
- Expert lectures
- Interactive workshops
- Collaborative strategy sessions
- Peer-to-peer knowledge exchange
Participants gained insights from international success stories, examined policy implementations, and explored cutting-edge approaches like artificial intelligence. Site visits included Rwanda’s healthcare facilities, such as Zipline’s drone-based medical delivery operations.
Conclusion and Outcomes
The course concluded with strategic presentations where country teams unveiled tailored roadmaps for their local health challenges. Expert feedback helped refine these frameworks for real-world application.
Through this unique multidisciplinary approach, participants:
