The illustrator for the Gruffalo books, Axel Scheffler, has expressed concern over the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) generated images, stating they are a "breach of copyright" and lack the charm of hand-drawn originals. He shared these views during the launch of their new book, Gruffalo Granny, alongside author Dame Julia Donaldson.

In an interview with the BBC, Scheffler mentioned that AI-created images are becoming increasingly prevalent, but he finds them "worrying". He believes that these digital replicas infringe on the intellectual property rights of original artists, especially when it comes to children’s literature where the hand-drawn aspect is integral to the experience.
