How Britain's Evans defied history to join rally greats

Elfyn Evans Defies History to Join Britain's Rally Greats Colin McRae and Richard Burns with WRC Title

BBC Sport Wales reports that Elfyn Evans has achieved something remarkable, becoming the first British winner of the World Rally Championship (WRC) in 25 years. This historic feat joins him among legendary figures like Colin McRae (1995) and Richard Burns (2001).

During the final stage of the final round in Sardinia, Italy, Evans watched anxiously as his rival Oliver Solberg neared the finish line. For a while, it seemed history was repeating itself, with Evans having experienced several close calls before, including three decided on the final day and two after taking a lead into the event.

However, fate intervened when Solberg veered off the track into the Sardinian sand, securing Evans' first world title at 3.06 pm local time. Evans had been preparing for another runners-up speech, but instead found himself celebrating his victory with traveling supporters.

"It wouldn't be my proudest way of winning it," Evans admitted, "but it's job done." His co-driver Scott Martin echoed this sentiment, revealing that Evans had already expressed regret about his performance during their wait for Solberg's finish.

Evans and Martin's consistent performances throughout the 2026 championship, from Monaco to Sweden, Chile, and Italy, led them into the final race with a 21-point lead. Despite winning only two events prior to the final round, they held on despite Solberg's dramatic finish.

In Evans' words, "I feel for [Solberg] after he came so close and lost at the last moment. I've been in a similar situation and it will be tough for him for a few days, but he's shown he's one to watch for the future."
