The Curious Row Over Climate Science: Cleaner Air and Global Warming
This July, during Britain’s record-breaking hot summer, a curious row broke out on X over climate science. Reform’s deputy leader Richard Tice shared a Telegraph article headlined: "Heatwaves caused by fall in pollution." He claimed cleaner air, not carbon dioxide, was to blame for rising temperatures, alleging the public had been misled.
While he was incorrect about carbon dioxide’s role in global warming, there is compelling science behind the distortion.
Burning fossil fuels generates two types of pollutants:
- Carbon dioxide (CO₂): Known to warm the Earth.
- Sulphur pollution: Forms tiny particles that reflect sunlight back into space, partially counteracting CO₂’s warming effect.
Thanks to global clean-air policies, sulphur emissions are plummeting while CO₂ remains near record highs. Scientists now believe this reduction in "cooling" from sulphur pollution is slightly accelerating global warming.
The past three years have been the warmest ever recorded, and 2027 is projected to surpass 2024 as the warmest year on record, according to the Met Office.
Beyond social media, this debate raises a crucial question: Could our planet be even more sensitive to greenhouse gases than we thought? If so, could climate change be progressing faster than anticipated?
Natural fluctuations in global temperatures, like El Niño, can create temporary spikes. Reto Knutti and his team at ETH Zurich have analyzed these fluctuations to reveal the underlying long-term trend: a clear acceleration in warming. A separate study arrived at similar conclusions, emphasizing the role of aerosols (including sulphur pollution).
