World News: Floods on Nepal-China Border Leave Hundreds Missing, 157 Bodies Recovered
Over 150 people have been killed and hundreds of foreign tourists remain missing after flash floods tore through villages on the border between Nepal and China’s Tibet region, according to international media reports.
As per the latest update from Nepal police (August 27, 2026), 157 bodies have been recovered, and more than 40 people are injured and undergoing treatment in hospital. UN relief agencies have deployed aid efforts to provide emergency assistance.
UN Spokesman Stephane Dujarric expressed sorrow over the severe flooding, stating:
“The Secretary-General is saddened by the severe flooding… which has claimed many lives, left people missing and caused widespread destruction.”
He added that UN Resident Coordinator in Nepal, Lila Pieters Yahia, is coordinating relief efforts with partners to support the government’s response.
In Nepal, authorities report that 10,000 households require immediate relief as settlements, markets, roads, bridges, and hydropower infrastructure were swept away or damaged, disrupting transportation and power supply.
The humanitarian community is providing emergency assistance, with ongoing assessment efforts to determine the extent of the disaster. The UN office in China also reported damage, significant casualties, and destruction in the Tibet autonomous region.
The UN prioritizes swift responses to emergencies, including immediate support for the flooding in Nepal. Humanitarian partners like Save the Children and the Nepalese Red Cross are mobilizing, with the latter deploying 200 emergency shelter packages to the flood-hit Nuwakot district.
