Iceland Summons US Ambassador Over Trump’s Stars and Stripes Map
BBC News reports that Iceland has summoned the US ambassador after President Donald Trump posted a controversial map on social media.
The map, shared on Truth Social, depicted the United States of America encompassing large swathes of territory belonging to other nations, including Iceland, Canada, Greenland, Mexico, and Central America. The post did not include a caption.
Iceland’s foreign minister termed the act as "completely inappropriate." This follows Trump’s ongoing territorial ambitions which have strained relations with neighboring countries, such as his interest in acquiring Greenland.
The summons of the US ambassador is a formal expression of displeasure from Iceland regarding Trump’s actions. Similarly, Denmark’s Prime Minister also criticized the map, reiterating Greenland’s stance that they do not wish to become part of the United States.
Trump’s posts come amid growing tensions over territorial claims and investment in regions like Greenland and Mexico, with various leaders asserting their countries’ sovereignty.
