Hafiz Naeemur Rahman Warns of Bigger Plan Over Petrol Prices

In a private TV programme, Jamaat-e-Islami emir Hafiz Naeemur Rahman stated that the government’s approach to petrol prices is questionable. He suggested that if the government reduces petrol prices, it would be acceptable; otherwise, his party has alternative plans.
Hafiz Naeemur Rahman highlighted the government’s alleged failure to abolish the petrol levy, despite proposals that could make it feasible. He accused the government of using the levy to hide its shortcomings, collecting Rs1.567 trillion in one year.
He further criticized the recent increase in petrol prices by Rs12, describing it as a great injustice. According to Hafiz Naeemur Rahman, the levy could have been reduced, and the party demands its abolition. He emphasized that the protest is for the people’s benefit and not motivated by personal or political gains.
The Jamaat-e-Islami leader mentioned that the government team claimed to be constrained by the IMF programme, preventing them from abolishing the levy. He revealed that some proposals had been presented to address this issue, including a reduction in the policy rate by 3%, which could have a significant impact.
Hafiz Naeemur Rahman also noted the support for the party’s protest from ANP‘s Mian Iftikhar and Barrister Gohar, and Sohail Afridi addressed the sit-in in Hyderabad during his Sindh visit. He expressed the desire to engage all political parties in the cause, as it is a matter of public concern.
Additionally, Hafiz Naeemur Rahman discussed the party’s support for administrative units, emphasizing that they should be based on public confidence and the Constitution.
