IHC Forms Larger Bench to Hear Petition Against PTI Long March
The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has formed a larger bench to address a petition against the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)’s planned protest and long march on September 27th, citing the sensitivity of the issue. The bench comprises Chief Justice Sarfraz Dogar, Justice Azam Khan, and Justice Muhammad Asif.
Notices have been issued to the Inspectors General (IGs) of all four provinces, the Attorney General, and the chief secretaries.
During a hearing led by Chief Justice Dogar, petitioner Waqas Ahmed’s counsel argued that citizens in Islamabad could face difficulties due to the PTI’s announcement. They referenced potential disruptions to business activities and cited past protests, including one in 2024, which resulted in violence and financial losses.
The lawyer emphasized that exerting pressure on state institutions through protests was unacceptable and referred to legal provisions regarding peaceful gatherings in Islamabad. They also presented a letter from the Ministry of Interior dated November 21, 2024, highlighting concerns about potential misuse of government machinery during the protest.
