Blackpink’s Lisa Manobal: Navigating a Race Scandal

British Broadcasting Corporation

In the world of K-pop, what does it feel like to be at the center of an online scandal? That's the question explored in the new documentary Always Lalisa, focusing on Blackpink member Lisa Manobal.

The film delves into a controversy sparked by leaked videos from Lisa's teenage days as a trainee in the K-pop industry, where she and her bandmates were caught using racial slurs while practicing US rap songs. The scandal intensified during rehearsals for Coachella 2025, leading to fan demands for an apology.

Documentarian Sue Kim provides an intimate look into Lisa's experience during this crisis. She recalls, "I honestly expected her to say no. But instead, [Lisa] laid down on a sofa and spoke from the heart."

In a raw and unfiltered moment, Lisa admits, "It's bad... Now I know better. But I did wrong." Her apology, delivered without script or media training, offers a glimpse into her vulnerability and humanity.

"Always Lalisa" hits cinemas on Monday, October 12th.
