Internet fungi foragers told 'click, don't pick'

Epping Forest Internet Fungi Foragers Urged to 'Click, Not Pick'

BBC News reports that internet fungi foragers in Epping Forest, Essex, are being urged to "click, not pick" due to concerns over the impact of social media posts showcasing mushroom picking.

Picking wild mushrooms from the forest is banned under by-laws, but officials fear that popularity of fungi-related content online may encourage others to disrupt the ecosystem.

Caroline Haines, chair of the City Corporation's Epping Forest and Commons Committee, emphasizes the importance of preserving the forest's ecosystem: "Picking the fungi can disrupt... nutrient recycling, support wildlife, and preserve 55,000 ancient trees."

She urges foragers to remember "click, don't pick" and appreciate the forest's natural beauty from a distance.

In recent years, several significant fungi discoveries have been made in Epping Forest, highlighting its ecological significance. The City Corporation, which manages the forest as a registered charity, reminds us that "our message is simple - click, don't pick."
