Iran Waiting for Official US Response After Trump Rejects Hormuz Deal, Minister Says

BBC News reports that Iran is awaiting a formal response from the United States following President Donald Trump's rejection of a proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, as stated by Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

US negotiators have not officially responded, said Araghchi, despite Trump publicly rejecting the offer on Saturday. Trump claimed that Iran's proposal was unacceptable and accused them of wanting to make a deal within seven days because they were losing in the conflict.

In a Telegram post, Araghchi acknowledged Trump's rejection but noted his past contradictory statements. He emphasized that Iran's negotiators are waiting for a "definitive" response and stressed that only a "negotiated solution" can end the conflict.

The conditions for opening the strait, according to Araghchi, remain the same as those outlined in a memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran signed in June. Iran raised the issue of reopening the strait and ending hostilities during UN General Assembly negotiations in New York this week.

The Strait of Hormuz, through which approximately one-fifth of global gas and oil supply flows, has been effectively closed since the beginning of the war in February.

Oman, acting as a mediator between the US and Iran, called for continued open dialogue to resolve the crisis. The US ambassador to Nato, Matthew Whitaker, supported Trump's rejection, characterizing Iran's proposal as "half measures" and "illusory deals." Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent added that economic sanctions against Iran are taking effect, with flights from various Iranian airlines being halted by Turkey, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates.
