JI Ameer Urges Govt To Lower Petroleum Levy
Jamat-e-Islami (JI) Ameer Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman said Tuesday his party would continue its peaceful protest camps against the petroleum levy, while giving the government one more opportunity to provide relief to the public.
Addressing a press conference in Multan, he mentioned that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had telephoned him from New York, requesting that the Islamabad march be deferred for a few days and assuring he would meet JI leadership soon upon returning home to find a solution to the levy issue.
Following consultations with the party's central leadership, Hafiz Naeem stated JI had decided to honor the Prime Minister's request. He added that if the matter remained unresolved, the march from Multan towards Islamabad would begin.
He highlighted that JI's protest, which started on August 16 at 42 locations nationwide, had remained entirely peaceful and dialogue between the government and JI's committee had already taken place over the past weeks.
Provincial JI leaders Syed Zeeshan Akhtar and Sohaib Ammar Siddiqui were present at the conference.
