ISLAMABAD, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 17th Sep, 2026)

Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry stated on Thursday that Karachi Port has achieved its highest-ever shipping connectivity, as evidenced by the Port Liner Shipping Connectivity Index (PLSCI) rising to 343.02 in the second quarter of 2026 from 309.81 in the first quarter. This growth indicates stronger connections with international liner shipping services, potentially expanding trade flows and offering opportunities for Pakistani exporters and importers.

According to the minister, the PLSCI—which tracks connectivity data from approximately 900 global ports—highlights Karachi Port's increasing role within the global shipping network. The index experienced a notable surge from 309.81 in Q1 2026 to 343.02 in Q2, marking the highest score during the data's coverage period.

Historical data reveals fluctuations:

  • Q2 2024: 329.24
  • Q3 2024: 319.20
  • Q4 2024: 323.67
  • Q1 2025: 321.70
  • Q2 2025: 321.84
  • Q3 2025: 298.56
  • Q4 2025: 321.91
  • Q1 2026: 309.81
  • Q2 2026: 343.02

Chaudhry attributed this improvement to efforts to strengthen Pakistan's maritime trade connectivity, noting a corresponding rise in the country's Liner Shipping Connectivity Index (LSCI) ranking from 35th to 34th. He emphasized that enhanced maritime links could facilitate trade flows, improve access to international markets, and streamline global supply chains for Pakistani businesses.

The minister praised the government's initiatives aimed at improving port services, simplifying shipping operations, and fostering a business-friendly environment. He expressed confidence that these measures would elevate Karachi Port's role in international trade and regional connectivity.

"These latest PLSCI and LSCI figures are part of our broader efforts to modernize the maritime sector and enhance the efficiency and competitiveness of our ports," Chaudhry concluded. "We will continue collaborating with port authorities, shipping lines, and other stakeholders to strengthen Pakistan’s maritime connections."
