Richard Hammond Thanks 999 Crews on Elvington Crash Anniversary
BBC News reports that former Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond has expressed his gratitude to emergency services on the 20th anniversary of a near-fatal crash.
In an Instagram post, Hammond shared his experience and thanked those who rescued him and supported him after the incident:
"Twenty years ago today, I came to an abrupt stop upside down in a Yorkshire field, convinced I was about to die," he wrote. "Having done everything I could to avert it, I gave myself over to that fate."
Hammond recalled the blow of a front tire and his lack of fear during the crash. He emphasized that while it wasn't frightening, he realized the next item on his 'to-do' list was death.
He went on to praise the efforts of various individuals and teams involved in rescuing him, flying him to hospital, and providing aftercare. He specifically mentioned the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and other support teams, expressing his eternal gratitude for their assistance.
Hammond also acknowledged the impact of this incident on his life, stating that he wouldn't have had the same career breaks or adventures if not for their help.
